My Review:

The Pier, the number 1 site for up-to-date reggae-rock music and news, has released their Pacific Island music sampler. This release features 29 tracks from 17 different artists, all from the Pacific Island region. While there are a handful of established bands in the collection (Pepper, Ooklah the Moc, The Black Seeds), there are several great new bands waiting to be discovered.

The opener “Love and Affection” by The Green is the perfect 1st track to the sampler. Out of the groups featured on this compilation, no band has made a bigger splash in the scene in the last year. This song is just a small taste of what's to come from this talented Hawaiian band.

The 2nd track comes from House of Shem. “Party” is a phenomenal track. I first heard about House of Shem while I was traveling in New Zealand. While their music has yet to make an impact in the States, they are definitely deserving to be recognized.

It is always tough for me to get into female vocals. If it wasn't for seeing Anuhea live with Mat McHugh and Mishka, I would have easily skipped over “Crown Royal.” Anuhea has an amazing voice and will no doubt do some great things for the scene.

The Sampler carries on with solid tracks from The Black Seeds, Inna Vision, Pepper, and Ooklah The Moc. Although the tracks from The Black Seeds are not new material, I have no problem with these tracks making the Sampler. This New Zealand band in my opinion is the most talented band on this album and they are quickly gaining a strong presence in the USA. Inna Vision is a band I first discovered while reading The Pier. From what I've heard, I really enjoy them. Pepper's “Wake Up” shows that they still have some old school Pepper vibe left. I haven't been pleased with their last 2 releases but this new song shows a glimpse of the rock-reggae sound they brought to the scene over 10 years ago.

Kora was the only group I had a tough time getting into on the album. For me, this band didn't really follow the Pacific Island reggae feel as the rest of the album. Both of Kora's tracks are too bass heavy for my mellow mood. Additionally, Splinta's “Leaving the West” had a very creative opening (PITTED!), however it was a bit too hip-hop for me.

The reason I come back to The Pier day after day is for music discovery. There are several groups on the Pacific Island Sampler I had never heard before and was happy I had the opportunity to stumble upon them. Although only one of their songs stuck with me, I look forward to hearing more from 1814. "Jah Rastafari" is a stellar track and has some great pacific island vibes. Konfrontationand Rootikal Riddim were two other bands that my ears heard for the first time. They are two bands that will be a welcomed addition to my expanding reggae music collection. Rootikal Riddim is my favorite “new band” that I got from this sampler. I've had a chance to check out their full length albums and they do not disappoint.

The sampler wraps up with another new band for me, The Alliez. “Right Time” is a very catchy song and a perfect way to close this great sampler. During the horns section of the song, I got similar vibes to the Mystic Roots Band (previously feat. on The Pier Summer Sampler '08). The Pacific Island Sampler is another solid release from the Pier. I look forward to more regional samplers, because I know it is bound to have some standout bands that are waiting to be discovered.

Hey there,

Life is going great. I've been living and working in the city for a little over a year now. Damn how time goes by.

Rather than catching you up on every detail, I thought I would share with you a few photos from the past few months.

But first a quick run down:

Giants season was a disappointment. I enjoyed going to the games but living in the city back-to-back playoff seasons would have been special
SF weather has been great. I hate people when they bitch about the cold and wind. It could be far worse. The sun has stuck around for a good amount of time and there sure have been some beauty's as of late
Great concert scene here, been to some great live shows
Riding the bus and not having a car is absolutely great. When the buses get smelly, frustrating and crowded, no better transport than on foot.

Music Tuesdays - Blink-182

Today, Blink-182 returns from a 4 year hiatus to release Neighborhoods, their first studio album in 8 years. I really did not know what to expect from this. Even after their reunion, it took a whole 2 years for them to finally release new material. After a few listens, I am pleasantly surprised. Definitely not a sound from the past though, so don't expect similarities to Dude Ranch or Enema of the State. Neighborhoods is a new sound and is a welcome addition to my music library. There are definitely alot of similarities to Angels and Airwaves. All in all, a great release. Happy these guys got back together to produce some new tunes.

Thrice today released their new album Major/Minor. This will easily make my top 10 album of the year list. In my opinion, it is the best out of their last 3 releases.

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder released his 2nd studio album today, Ukulele Songs. It contains some classic covers as well as a few originals. Not much else to say, just let the soothing sound of the ukulele take you away!

Today, Incubus released their first single from their upcoming album "If Not Now, When?" Their new album is set to hit stores July 12, and this first track seems to be a great sign of things to come. There have been several disappointing album releases this year from some of my favorite artists, hopefully July 12 will start a new trend for the remainder of the year.

This new album is a welcome addition to their collection and is quickly becoming one of my favorite albums of the year. The album has received great reviews and 1st week sales are looking around 80k to 90k.

Today, Pearl Jam released their 20th anniversary live album, "Live on Ten Legs." The album is a follow up to their 1998 album, "Live On Two Legs." The new live album features recordings from their 2003-2010 world tours. Pearl Jam have really come into play my last 5 or so music years. They are one of the best live bands I have seen and easily a top 5 band of mine. Extremely happy to welcome this album into my catalog.

Music Tuesdays - Young the Giant

I first discovered this band via the world famous KROQ radio under their weekly locals only band playlist. Their hit single "My Body" really caught me. After seeing their hype build, and hearing them recently perform on Jimmy Kimmel, I decided to get their full album. Not sure what took me so long, but am I glad I finally did. They are a great up and coming band that is definitely worth a listen.

My Top 10 Albums of 2010

Well it's that time of the year when countless top 10 lists get announced. It is with great pleasure that I bring you once again, Joe's Top 10 Album's of The Year. Too be honest, the list seems to be lacking for 2 reasons. 1) Not the best year for new music and releases. 2) ever since I started working 40 hrs a week, my music discovery time has dwindled leaving many undiscovered bands out there. Anyhow, enjoy! Post in the comments some of your favorite albums of 2010.

My Top 10 Albums of 2010

You will notice that this year I have included a stream of my favorite song off of each album.

10. Iration - Time Bomb

The cali-reggae band Iration starts the list this year. Their release Time Bomb definitely had some great tracks on it. Not their best effort but still a solid one. I will always look forward to new releases from these guys. Perfect summer tunes.

9. Minus the Bear - OMNI

If it wasn't for me stumbling into a live show of these guys 3 years ago, I never would have gotten into them. Am I glad I did. OMNI is a great album from start to finish.

8. Conditions - Fluorescent Youth

Probably the least familiar band to make the list this year. Can't even remember how I discovered these guys last year. They are a solid rock/punk/hardcore band and Fluorescent Youth is their first full-length album. It is a fiery pump up the entire way through. For fans of Saosin, Dead Poetic, Circa Survive.

7. Stick Figure - The Reprise Sessions

Not much introduction needed here. Any music friend of mine knows Stick Figure is at the top of my list when it comes to up and coming reggae acts. The Reprise Sessions is the first album made by Stick Figure (Scott Woodruff) backed with a full band. Many of the songs on the album were remakes so not a whole bunch of new material. Unfortunately, not as good as Burnin' Ocean or Smoke Stack, two albums to make the top 2 spots on my 08-09 lists. Either way, Stick Figure is still putting down tunes and the fan base is rapidly growing. I wish them nothing but the best in 2011 and hopefully I will finally get a chance to see them live.

6. Circa Survive - Blue Sky Noise

This one was one of my most anticipated albums for the year and Circa Survive delivered. This band continues to put out solid work and have been one of my most played artists in the past few years. The lead singer Anthony Green is a beast and is one of the best live performers I've seen. His studio work ain't bad either.

5. Mishka - Talk About

Mishka has finally made way into my top 10 list this year with his latest release album, Talk About. Such a mellow and feel good album. Considered reggae/roots/surf music. For fans of Jack Johnson.

4. Secret and Whisper - Teenage Fantasy

Another so called wild-card to make this list. This band has quickly become one of my favorites in the past 2 years. Teenage Fantasy is the band's 2nd album and it picks up right where their debut album Great White Whale left off. This album is a head shaker and has some super catchy melodies. For fans of Saosin, Circa Survive.

3. Chiodos - Illuminaudio

You will find that my top 3 albums to make the list this year have all been released within the last 3 months. I tried my best reviewing for the whole year but it was hard to ignore these 3 as they were in heavy rotation on my iPod lately. Chiodos worried me going into this album. They had parted ways with their old singer Craig Owens and I thought there was little hope for the band. When they announced they picked up the lead singer of Yesterday's Rising (a band I used to thoroughly enjoy) I got a bit excited. This album has received alot of positive and negative feedback. All I can recommend is listen to this album as whole. The entire feel of the album is powerful and illuminating. Fans will always wonder how good this album would have been if the old singer was still with the band. This could have very easily made number 1.

2. Senses Fail - The Fire

What I liked about this new release from Senses Fail was that there were no surprises. Time after time I have had my favorite bands try to change up their sound to stay fresh and things backfire. Senses Fail has kept to their true sound and has delivered another solid release. For fans of The Used, Finch, Thursday.

1. UnderOath - Ø (Disambiguation)

Another album, another #1 on Joe's album of the year list. I've said it before and I'll say it again, UnderOath is the heaviest band in my music collection and there is just something about their sound that captures me everytime. Maybe not their best album but a damn good one. Without their old drummer Aaron that used to provide the pop, this may be their deepest and darkest album yet.

Grooveshark - The Best Streaming Music Site On The Internet

Move aside Pandora, Last.fm, and even YouTube Music. Grooveshark is your new favorite streaming music site on the internet. If you are an avid Pandora fan, I challenge you to try out grooveshark. You have nothing to lose - it's FREE. Don't get me wrong, I was a huge Pandora fan a few years ago. I found almost all my new bands through Pandora. But the interruptions, the audio ads, the inability to skip more than 3 songs.....it all added up and I slowly turned away from Pandora. It was until about 6 months ago when a friend mentioned Grooveshark to me. From that point on, my internet music life has never been the same. No lame audio ad interruptions and definitely no 3 song skip limit. In simple terms, Grooveshark is the entire iTunes store with full song previews. You can save and create your own playlists, create your own radio stations and listen to any song you are looking for with a simple search. A few banner advertisements is all you will have to deal with. Pretty minimal if you ask me.

The site has been around for 3 years but is just now starting to see the traffic and recognition it deserves. It is the most complete free online music service out there. It gives you the ability to integrate with Facebook/Twitter, buy songs off iTunes/AmazonMp3, and the best yet...create your own playlists and save your favorite songs. As Grooveshark's popularity rises, so do the legal questions. In 2009, EMI filed a lawsuit on Grooveshark due to copyright infringement. The lawsuit was later dropped and EMI signed a licensing deal with Grooveshark and now provides them with a catalog of their music. Grooveshark is growing fast, seeing about 250 million songs played a month by its 27 million users. Currently, Grooveshark's only funding is from advertisements and its VIP service ($6-$9 a month).

The Rise of Can Poaching

If you live in the SF Bay Area, chances are you've seen them. They wander the streets (or even your backyard) with their plastic bags and shopping carts. They may be homeless, they may be unemployed, or maybe they're just looking for additional income. They all have one thing in common--they are recycle thieves and they are cashing in at the state's expense. The CRV (California Refund Value) program, which boasts 85% recycling of bottles and cans, has become central to an underground economy that has created a life for thieves in recent years (source).

I first became aware of this trend around 2 years ago while I was attending college. Having lived the college party life, I had purchased my fair share of 30 packs of beer and the cases of plastic water bottles for those morning afters. Having paid crv tax on every purchase, I saved all my cans and bottles to receive my tax back at the nearby recycle center. I would "cash out" about once or twice a semester with about 1 or 2 trash bags. However, everytime I went to the recycle center I waited around 30-45 minutes to cash my cans. The issue? There were atleast 3 people in line ahead of me with about 5-10 trash bags EACH full of cans/bottles. I was trying to utilize the recycle center as they were intended to be used, and there before me where these can hoarders with their 50-100 dollars worth of recyclables. There was no way these bags were full of recyclables from personal use. They had been poached from nearby college apartment complexes and dormitories. However, I will acknowledge that there is some chance that some of their collectibles came as litter from off the street.

Are these recycling thieves helping or hurting our society? On one side of the argument, you can stress that these can thieves who extract recyclables from trash bins or off the streets help make the world a cleaner and better place. That is a benefit to these so called "recyclers." On the other hand, the can/bottle thieves often rummage through personal or city property and in turn, are taking money from the state and the recycling programs. The California law states: the moment cans are placed in a recycling bin, they become the property of the city; thus, anyone who takes from them is guilty of theft.

In December 2009 alone, San Francisco received more than 1,500 complaints from residents of people rummaging through their garbage, making noise and stealing recyclables in the early hours of the morning (source). What bothers me the most is the possibility that all these people are working together. It's been uncovered before. Potential so called "recycle families." Where each team member has a certain quota to meet everyday and sticks it to the state one can at a time. According to San Francisco police and recycling officials, the illegal gathering has been estimated to collect between $2 million and $5 million worth of recyclables a year.

Can theft seems to be a low priority on the police department's watch list. There are too many poachers out on the streets not to notice. Granted there are more important crimes to worry about, but these thieves are significantly putting a dent into the state's budget. Recycled bottles and cans with California redemption value labels on them can fetch about 5 or 10 cents each if taken to a state redemption center. My 2 full bags of cans and bottles gave me about 10-15 dollars cash. Imagine what these poachers can bring in on a given haul. Although according to this article, the police has manage to bust some big time poachers.

The issue is much deeper than what I am touching on here. Poaching from personal/public property is one thing. How about the extreme poachers that come from out-of-state with their cans to redeem at CA value. Shady recycle centers don't follow all the California redemption regulations are also contributing to the problem.

The bottle bill "Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act" that was enacted in 1987 had a few main goals.

Final Points:

Like most of my arguments, I don't really know how to pose a viable solution to this. Although I will say, if there are real homeless people out there that use recycling of bottles and cans and bottles to get by, more power to them. My grind is that most of the people I witness are far from homeless. They are part of an efficient business that probably hauls in a good 400-600 dollars a day. All is takes is a couple schools and/or restaurant recycle bins and you have yourself a solid 10 bags of recyclables. In the end, as a California citizen that pays for CRV, I'd like to go cash in my recycables comfortably and efficiently, just the way the program was originally meant to run like.

The City by the Bay

Well I have been living and working in arguably the best city in the world for about 2 months now. Think I am a bit overdue for a recap. It has been an action packed 2 months: from crazy weekend nights and day parties, to free concerts in the park and a world series championship.

Working Life

Working up here has been great. We have an exceptional office location and I am just a 20-30 minute 3 mile bus ride away. I have always loved public transport and not having a car has yet to be an issue for me.

The SF Muni bus system has been stellar. Thanks to NextBus I have pretty much never missed a bus. I am definitely a back-of-the-bus sort of guy. I like the transport, and the certain encounters the bus offers, but other than that, I try to tune everything else out. The kids talking, the array of languages, the shuffling of newspapers. I can assure you my iPod is on and rockin loud. One of my biggest annoyances is when you get stuck with an aisle seat on a full bus. You are then smothered with people around you, occassionally getting their ass or crotch level with your head, not the most ideal of situations. However, when the bus is at capacity, seeing the faces of people at the bus stops as the bus goes by is priceless. I've always been a big people watcher, and with my iPod blaring, I'm all eyes and no ears. I constantly see women who lack time management putting their makeup on before work. Must require some skill because I haven't had too many smooth drivers, pretty sudden stop-and-go in my opinion. On almost any ride, either before or after work (not counting the homeless and drug dealers) 85% of people on the bus are consumed with their smartphones. Then there are those people that read books on the bus, the worst is when they are standing up and reading. As the bus passes thru Chinatown, it is almost like a New Years celebration as a sea of red plastic bags fill the seats. Can't say I blame them, I scope out the prices thru the bus window and I must say they are quite competitive.

Life outside the Cubicle

Not gonna lie, work nights are rough. By the time I get home and eat dinner, I am pretty shot. When the weather was warm and there was still daylight, I was pretty active after work. Recently in the rain and the new daylight savings, I find myself lacking major motivation. That is why when the weekends come around, it is time to shine. The weekends have been full of "back in college" days. Meeting up with old friends and having a great day/night of drinking. The scene, as I previously knew, is one of the best. Young, working/unemployed folk all looking to have a good time. Attractive looking crowd out there for sure. I think the local Safeway is a testament to that, named one of the best pick up spots in the Bay Area.

Anyhow, upcoming plans are to explore parts of this city I have never explored. It is so large, and with my unlimited bus ride pass, the possibilities are endless. I need to develop a game plan and purchase a new camera, but this will be achieved sooner than later. There is a reason why this city is one of the world's most heavily visited tourist destinations.

Big Events

The past two month will most likely rank as the best 2 months of the year for San Francisco. With the end of summer festivities and the Giants winning the World Series for the first time in San Francisco, it will be a time to remember.

I attended a few free concerts in Golden Gate park. The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival and the Power to the Peaceful festival. They may have been free, but the all-star lineups may have justified a 40-80 dollar ticket fee. But I think a free day out in the park is what makes it half the fun, in the addition to the BYOB.

Fleet Week was about a month ago, and for me, it is my favorite weekend of the year in the city. Hearin the Blue Angels roar by gets the adrenaline pumping. Coupled with beautiful weather and day drinking on top of apartment roofs, I don't believe there is a better combination.

The baseball season has finally came to an end, but the last 2 months seemed to always have something to do with the Giants. It may seem like a blur now, but the end of the regular season and the entire playoff series was an experience never to forget. Not being able to afford playoff tickets, I was lucky I worked so close to the ballpark. I was still able to feel the the energy and excitement of this special season. It was an expensive post season due to the my increase in bar attendance, but it was all worth it. I will never forget the times spent at Pedro's Cantina across from the park cheering on the Giants, or watching them win the series at City Hall. I will never forget the after party in the streets with champagne or the victory parade. Thank you Giants, that was an entertaining ride.

The city was full of Black and Orange and I was loving it. One of the nearby landmarks, Coit Tower, was lit up in special playoff colors in support for the home team.

Music Tuesdays - UnderOath

My most anticipated album of the year is finally here. Today, UnderOath released "Ø (Disambiguation)," their 7th studio album. You've heard it before on here, they are the heaviest band in my music library and are one of my favorites. I don't often go for deep screams and heavy metal riffs but something about this band has always captured me. They are a Christian band with religious beliefs tied into their lyrics, but for me, the lyrics get pushed aside, I let the crushing breakdowns and thunderous screams take me away. Once their music is on, it's time to rock out. The mosh pit gets going and the adrenaline gets pumping. This album is their darkest and heaviest to date, and it's flawless. It is amazing to see this band deliver album after an album. They have yet to stop progressing and this album may be my favorite yet.

I had a feeling going into Game 5 that the Giants were going to show up and be victorious. I knew Lincecum was gonna have a solid game but was not sure offensively who was gonna deliver. Edgar Renteria answered in the top of the 7th and the Giants were on there way to clinching their first world series title in San Francisco. The long ball became a big part of the Giants postseason success. Win after win, a new player seemed to step up and be a hero for the Giants. I think much of the success can trace back to manager Bruce Bochy in making some phenomenal game plans. Some I questioned, but with winning results, it makes it a bit tougher to state my case.

The party back in San Francisco was something that I was truly honored to be a part of. It will go down as one of the most memorable nights in my life. I wish I had a counter for the number of high fives I gave out. Counting of the drinks I consumed is also a bit unclear. I can tell you though, that the night did start with a few bottles of champagne.

The drinks never tasted so good as the entire night was essentially a tribute to a team that provided so much entertainment over the years. The team was due, and so were the city and its fans. It was a night never to forget, and yes Brian Wilson, we raged, we raged hard.

I have been a Senses Fail fan ever since I saw them in concert about 3 years ago. Their last two studio albums are some of my favorite listens in the past few years. Today, they release "The Fire" and after the first few tracks I know this album will be a Top 10 album of the year for me. This album does not steer too far from their sound on their past albums and it is fine with me. If anything, it's a bit heavier, and I greatly welcome it for those rock-out bus rides home.

Just heard about these guys a few weeks ago via my coworker Omar. So far, I really like what I hear and I have a feeling they will be making a name for themselves over the next couple years. They are an 11 piece band out of Los Angeles, California with a sound that makes you think they are from the 70's. Their debut album Up From Below came out last year, the download link is below.

The Holdup are a reggae/rock/hip-hop band from San Jose, CA. I first discovered these guys a few years ago via some live shows. Their first release "Stay Gold" was very impressive and definitely a tough act to follow. Today they released their 2nd album "Confidence." Don't think it tops their previous release but still a solid effort.

Music Tuesdays - Stick Figure

If you are familiar with my blog, this may not be the first time you have seen the name Stick Figure. Stick Figure often makes it into my top played weekly music charts, twitter feed, and their previous albums have also landed the top spots on my last two "Top 10 Albums of the Year" posts.

Today, Stick Figure is at it again with their new release "The Reprise Sessions." Scott Woodruff is the mastermind behind the band. He had previously recorded and produced all the albums, essentially a one man band, doing all the vocals and instruments himself. This time he his backed by his new band members. This album showcases many recreated versions of his top songs from his previous 3 albums, with a couple brand new ones thrown in the mix.

The overall sound of the CD stays true to the once, one-man-band, Stick Figure. Now that this is a full band, we can hopefully expect a full tour schedule as well as more new music in the near future. They are my favorite band in the reggae/rock/dub genre. There is no better consistent feel good vibes out there right now.

The Black Seeds have a musical sound so diverse it does not suprise me that this band is starting to make way in the US. They are a group from New Zealand, a kiwi favorite. I had heard about the Black Seeds before I went to New Zealand, but my time over there and hearing the locals talking about them really got my interest level up. Their music has a little bit of everything, funk, reggae, dub and soul.

The Black Seeds have released five studio albums: Keep On Pushing L.P (2001) and On The Sun (2003), Into the Dojo (2006) and Solid Ground (2008)

iPod Touch iOS4 Battery Flaw

It has not been a great couple of weeks for Apple. Although to their defense, they did sell 1.7 million iPhone 4's within the first week. Anyhow, any of you that are somewhat involved in the tech world have heard about the antennae/reception issue with the new iPhone. Apple has been getting some heavy criticism in the press for this and the company has not offered a definitive solution as of yet. They say they are "working on it".

With all the iPhone talk, another major issue seemed to have flown under the radar. I have just discovered this the other day while upgrading my iPod Touch 2g to the new iOS4. Research has confirmed this major issue. Ever since I upgraded the OS, my iPod's battery drains drastically while in sleep mode. This has now happened back to back days. Every morning I wake up to my iPod to check my mail, news, etc. I then put it on sleep mode and take off for work. These past 2 days I have come back from work (9hrs later) an my iPod has little or no charge left. Before upgrading to iOS4, my ipod would have little or no change to the battery while in sleep mode.

The iPod Touch 2nd gen seems to be experiencing this issue more than the rest of the iPhone or iPod models. It is pretty unfortunate. I have just unjailbroken my iPod too hoping that I would approve of the new OS. I know regret my decision and am waiting for a fix for this. Ii know Apple is aware of the issue as thousands of iPod users have let it be known. I am now waiting for a software update and anxious to "stick it to the man" and get back on the jailbroken train. I guess I just expected more from a company that is defining new mobile technology these days. They clearly jumped the release on this a bit, and clearly the testing stage missed out on some MAJOR flaws. And for the record, the iPod/iPhone/iPad are the ONLY Apple products I will ever buy or supports. As of now I only have an iPod for the sole reason that it truly is the best portable music player/mobile device out there. Besides that, I hate Apple and am disgusted when people say they like macbooks because "they can't get viruses."

Music Tuesdays - Sublime with Rome

One of my favorite bands of all time, Sublime, is making news again in the music world. They (Bud Gaugh - Drums, Eric Wilson - Bass) have reunited with a new singer, Rome. The band has taken up the name, Sublime with Rome. Although no one can ever replace Bradley Nowell, this guy Rome kills it on the vocals.

Just recently they performed on Jimmy Kimmel. They played their first new song together called "Panic." Not bad at all.

Today, Eminem released his new highly anticipated album, "Recovery." From the few listens I've had, it is a very solid release from my favorite white rapper. I don't get into rap unless its music from Dr. Dre or Eminem. There really hasn't been any Eminem album I haven't been a fan of. Like most critiques though, I definitely found his early albums more enjoyable than his recent ones. However, I think Recovery is a great step forward into his sound of the past. He released Recovery only a year after his last release, Relapse. It is great to see and hear that Eminem still has it and continues to deliver stellar tracks and freestyles. I am glad I didn't have to wait another 5 years for new music. Next up for Marshall Mathers? hopefully some guest vocals on Dr. Dre's famously hyped/yet to be released new album!

Kobe Bryant and the Lakers : 2010 NBA Champions

Congrats to Kobe Bryant and the Lakers for winning the 2010 NBA Championship. As a sports fan, I couldn't have asked for a better series between the Celtics and Lakers. Many people ask me, how are you a Lakers fan? My response is always, "I'm not a Laker fan, I'm a Kobe fan." The Golden State Warriors will always be my favorite team. Another reason I rooted for the Lakers is I am not a huge Celtic fan. I really dislike Garnett, Pierce and "Big Baby" Davis for my own reasons. Although much respect to Jesus Shuttlesworth (Ray Allen) and Rondo.

I watch sports purely for entertainment, therefore I enjoy entertainers. Kobe Bryant is an entertainer. Just like Barry Bonds and his "steroid issue", Tiger Woods with his "cheating problems," I could care less of anything they do outside the game. As long as I find them entertaining, I am a fan. Kobe is the best player currently in the NBA when it comes down to the final minutes. Something about that feeling you get when the Lakers are close with a few minutes left, and all eyes are on Kobe. Time after time he delivers. Something I really have yet to witness with Lebron James. Many people here on the west really dislike Kobe and the Lakers. It was a great year for them. And I will admit, as well as Kobe did, he couldn't have won it without his supporting cast, especially Pau Gasol. Mr. Clutch Derek Fisher isn't too shabby in the closing minutes as well. And how bout Ron Artest delivering that huge three in game 7. I think everyone in the world thought he would miss, let alone ever guess Kobe would give up the ball to him.

A topic that has been surfacing lately is the argument between Kobe Bryant and Michael Jorodan for greatest NBA player of all time.

My take on this is short and simple. It's not as an outrageous argument as some analyst make it out to be, but when it comes down to it, Michael Jordan is the greatest player to have played the game and will be in my lifetime. With that said, I would classify Kobe 2nd, 3rd or 4th. There is some indescribable feeling about Jordan that he brought to games and the playoffs, that I just don't get with Kobe. Yes I get some spurts of it in Kobe, just not on the same scale as Jordan. Kobe may win more rings and MVPs than Jordan, but that is just a small part of the argument. Jordan being surrounded by Pippen, Kerr, Rodman and Kukoc also doesn't help Kobe either. What a legendary Chicago Bulls team.

There you have it. Kobe Bryant, you are a legend and a phenomenal player. You have done enormous things for the game of basketball, you are a hero among kids and thousands of over-sea sport fans. The fact that you are fluent in Italian also adds some liking to you. Keep killin it, see you for the three-peat.

Maybe you can one day play for the Warriors so I don't need to tag Laker promos all over my blog, that would be great. On a side-related note, Warriors just released their new logo. Check it.

World Cup 2010

So the World Cup is 3 days in, and what an exciting time for sports. The World Cup is the most widely viewed sporting event in the world; an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 World Cup held in Germany. Having traveled a good portion of the world, I know how big the sport of futbol is to countries outside the US. I rarely call the sport soccer now. My love for the game of futbol has only developed in the past several years. My time in Italy played a big role to my developed interest in the sport. Having attended a Fiorentina game, experiencing the fans/chants/excitement and riots, there seems to be no bigger passion in sports than futbol for Europeans. In addition to my time in Europe, and learning how big futbol was on the global scale, I started getting into FIFA video games with my roomate in college. I would rate FIFA soccer video games the best sport game out there. Over the span of 3 years, my roomate and I played atleast 500 games, each with a monetary wager on the line. There were definitely a few hundred dollar payouts. With that said, I am not going to pretend I know everything about the sport. I can name a big few players, but couldn't tell you every league and team out there. As far as American soccer, the MLS, I could care less about. However, when futbol comes on a world stage, and players are representing their respective country's, there is no better month in sports (yes, I think it beats out the NCAA Bball Tourney)

I think the fact that the World Cup comes only 1 time in 4 years it what makes it so great. I find it much more exciting than the Olympics, I am sure many would agree with me on that one.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is the 19th world cup and is being held in South Africa. This is the first time that the tournament has been hosted by an African nation. So far, I've been thrilled with the coverage and I like all the culture and history displayed in the broadcasts.

Music Tuesdays - Matt Lucca

This weeks new music comes from one of my favorite solo artists, Matt Lucca. I first discovered Matt during his time in Rebelution, where I discovered his great vocals on their debut album, Courage to Grow. After the album release, Matt and Rebelution parted ways, and in my opinion, are desperately missing his vocals on their new material. He provided a necessary diverse sound for the band. He is as good as a song writer as he is a singer. Some of my favorite tracks off Courage to Grow that showcase Matt are Courage to Grow, Ordinary Girl, Heart Like a Lion, and On My Mind.

Fortunately for us, Matt has continued to produce and create his own style of music in the recent years. He is currently based out of the legendary coastal city, Santa Cruz, California.

His last project, Drum Major Instinct, was phenomenal. If you get into this, please check out his last album, Back to the Sun.

In his new project, Matt Lucca, continues right where he left Drum Major Instinct. The new album In Between Love and Hate portrays his soft yet powerful voice and greatly exemplifies Matt's deep passion for music.

After some time off from the blog world, I would like to think my life is getting back to normal after 5 months of legendary travel stories.

With that, a new blog layout and design is out. Had some html issues but gonna have to make due. I sold out too if you haven't noticed. Put some advertisements up to try to get some cash on the side.

On a similar note, this blog now has over 10,000 page views. There are bound to be some flaws in the count and most visitors are my reoccurring loyal readers, but i still think it is a pretty solid accomplishment having just been in existence for 3 years

The blog from here on out will once again transition away from a travel blog and have more posts to relevant current events, sport stories, and music. Music being such a great passion of mine, the blog will transform into a breeding ground for great new music out there. Tough luck but i like to think I have the best music taste in the world and I want everyone to know about it.

Worthy Travel Accessories

Besides the basics of a great pack and proper clothes, I have compiled a list of items that I found quite nice and made my journey a lot more comfortable and enjoyable.

Asus Netbook



Obviously not essential but this little thing was quite handy. About the size of 2 folded t shirts and about 3 pounds, it was not much of a burden to carry around.  I saved heaps of space packing as I had every guide book stored on my netbook, no need to lug around those thick books.  Additionally, it came in quite handy while researching upcoming travel destinations, especially while having wifi access in my apartment back in Sydney. Saved me heaps of money as I didnt always have to go to internet cafes.  The entertainment factor was also a benefit. It allowed me to update my ipod with new music, play some movies I had saved as well as tv shows. Quite possibly the most beneficial aspect of carrying along a computer is photo uploads. I never had to stress about not having enough space on my camera after every day trip/activity, I could always upload my photos to my computer. Super easy and convenient. Lastly, updating this blog would have been 5 times more of a hassle without my netbook, very convenient for a blogger on the run.


Ipod Touch


An mp3 player is something I am never caught without. I live for music and this is probably the most important commodity on the list. Its obviously great for walking around and falling asleep to, but a great companion on long bus rides and planes.  In addition, wifi on the ipod touch makes some things very convenient with an internet connection, for example skype, checking email and US news updates.  And you can't forget the games. Great while going to bed or on the toilet, there's an app that can make anyone happy. Paper toss, magnetic joe, fling and jungle crash are just a few that have been my favorites.

Tripod for Camera


A crucial addition.  My mini tripod allowed me to take some unbelievable photos, expecially night time picts.  Also convenient if travelling solo and don't always have someone to take a picture of you. 

Travel Shower Bag


A must have for any backpacker. Crucial for shady dirty hostels. This one expanded into three separate compartments, never had storage issues and it always had a spot for my wallet, passport and other valuable

Swiss Army Knife


Would be more convenient if I was out in the outback, but still used it a good amount,the knife and scissors mostly.  Didn't leave the hostels without it. The knife was quite handy for smearin on some peanut butter and jelly while on the go or on the trail


Axe Body Spray


A backpackers B.O. cure.  Even showering everyday, it is a given that you wear the same clothes 4-5 days straight. This body spray is the ultimate mask to any bad odor.

Microfiber Towel


Another great research find on my part.  A great backpacking addition. Very quick drying and not a big hassle if you have to shower and pack your bag and board the bus immediately to your next destination.  It absorbs heaps of water and is very thin.

Those are just a few. I've been home 2 weeks now and definitely missing the solo travel life. What an experience!

The Trip That Was.....

Well that is it I guess. My bags are packed. Feels like I am going to board a plane to my next travel destination, but the reality is I am heading home.

I have the rare chance to see the same sun set in the same day. I leave at 11pm tonight (sunday NZ time) and arrive in San Francisco at 5pm (Sunday SF time). Pretty special, will be a challenge to spot the sun from inside the airport but I will try to make it happen

- I am sure that the past 5 months will go down as some of the best and most memorable ones in my entire life.

- It was one damn expensive trip and I am extremely grateful to all of those involved in making it happen. It would have not been possible without a few generous loans, xmas gifts and bday presents.

- I was a fool to think working a couple months could fund nearly half my trip, it funded only around 1/3 of it.

- This trip is a rejection to the saying "money cant buy happiness" I rarely had bad days and took every day as a gift. Not many people are as lucky as me to have had this sort of opportunity and for that I am grateful. Not matter how bad my day was, or how shitty work was, I took a step back and told myself "you are traveling in another country and living the dream, life isnt that bad, its actually pretty spectacular, so sack up and make the most of it"

This journey would not have been such a memorable one without the heaps of great people and friends I have met along the way. I have recorded(a document with all names and how I met them) all encounters with people that I would classify acquaintances and friends, they amount up to possibly more friends than I ever had in 4 years of college. Really shows how awesome traveling solo can be if you make the most of it. With that, current technology and social media sites like Facebook have made it a synch to keep in touch with all my new friends from all over the world. I plan for them to visit me one day in California and I plan to see them again in their respective countries. World connections are where its at.

- I will miss the meat pies, Australian and New Zealand Beer, and Kebabs

- The hostels i stayed in where practically 4 and 5 star hotels for the price of around 22 US dollars a night. Best place to stay and meet new people.

- Partially due to the above, my man boobs have probably grown. I may have gotten a bit skinnier but despite living the backpackers life, I feel really healthy. Stoked I never got sick. My lower body muscles are as strong as ever after walking/hiking heaps of kilometers a day

- I look forward to Mexican Food and dollar menus at fast food places.

As I end this grand journey, it is time to head back home and start a new chapter in my great life.

I am excited to head back. Always being a big family guy, my family home is always where my heart is. I can't wait to see all my family and friends, and that little rascal that is my devil possessed dog, Bailey. It will be great for a few days to see everyone, shit on my own toilet, shower without sandals, changing without having a towel wrapped around me keeping my privates from being exposed to my dorm mates, etc, but know I will eventually miss all that ive had for the last 5 months.

I have some things to keep my occupied for awhile, including some great US TV shows including 24, and Lost. Having been practically out of the music scene for 5 months, ive got some new music to discover and can't wait. Having the same music for the past 5 months has been killing me inside but thankful for some great artists that have the ability to keep me entertained no matter how often I listen to them. Also got my brothers bachelor party coming up in 2 weeks, can't wait. Picnic day in a month and a great reunion with my old UC Davis college past.

No more putting off reality anymore, its time to face the future. I am nervous, yet excited at the same time and am anxious to see where I am headed. The possibilities are endless and I'm optimistic that everything will work out, just like it always has.

To my loyal readers, thanks for reading. I have typed more pages of words in these past 5 months than all my term papers and essays combined in the last 16 years of school. Writing about personal encounters is far easier than gathering research and supporting an argument in a thesis statement, it's quite more enjoyable as well. This blog is definitely considered a hobby of mine and you can see I have been pretty dedicated to it. I enjoy every bit of it and too im sure it saved me from hundreds of emails and phone calls to let everyone know what im doing or if I was still alive. I understand that reading about someone elses great life may not be enjoyable but hope you atleast enjoyed the pictures.

New Zealand Recap

Kia Ora,

What a great month I had in this beautiful, great country. I knew after the initial apple incident at customs things were only going to get better. All the great things you've ever heard about New Zealand are true. Stunning scenery, extremely nice people, and heaps of sheep. May be my favorite country I've ever visited (Italy you're right there too so don't worry) Just felt great to be here.

I have a tendency to ramble so will keep this short and simple.

- Traveling on the Magic Bus was pretty good, not sure if it topped Greyhound in OZ, but definitely liked how it always dropped me at the front door of the accommodation and could always book things for me via the driver. I did learn heaps from the bus drivers though, it was practically a tour bus with history and info on all of New Zealand and the certain citys. I learned a lot more about New Zealand in 1 month than I did about Australia in 4 months.

- New Zealand seems to really embrace its culture and history. There is a big Maori influence in every aspect of life. A big difference from the Aborigines and Australia.

- New Zealands tourism industry has to be one of the biggest in the world. Almost every town seems to run off tourism.

- I enjoyed both the North and South Islands, both offered a different feel. South Island was a bit more adventure and liveliness. North Island was a bit more laid back and tranquil, but still beautiful scenery and heaps of things to do.

- New Zealand produces some very tasty apples.

- It was great having alcohol prices back to normal after that extremely steep australian liquor tax.

- Loved the exchange rate here, but still spent a hefty amount of money.

Now a few of my favorite parts of the trip.

South Island

- On the shuttle bus into Christchurch city laughing at the fact I had just paid 200 dollars for forgetting I had an apple in my backpack

- Hiking the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park coastal track

- A great 23rd birthday in Franz Josef after a phenomenal day hiking up the glacier

- Lake Wanaka, hiking up that intense mountain with Konrad and looking at one of the most stunning scenic views my eyes have ever seen. Afterwards making tacos for the Germans.

- Partying in up in Queenstown and gettin into a fat juicy tasty Fergburger

- The day trip out to the majestic Milford Sound

North Island

- Walking around Wellingtons harbour and catching the sunset at nearby Mount Victoria

- Skydiving in Taupo, reaching and exceeding the limits I thought I could take myself

- Hiking the Tongariro Alping Crossing

- Waitomo Caves black water inner tubing

- Getting in some quality beach time in Mount Mauganui

New Zealand, thank you for providing a great epic month of traveling. Sweet As and see you next time

Auckland

Day 1 : Saturday March 6, 2010

My shuttle bus left Coromandel town in the early morning and met up with the Magic Bus back in Thames around 10. From there we made the two hour journey up to Auckland, the City of Sails, and the largest New Zealand city with a population around 1.2 million.

I walked down the main street, Queen Street towards the harbour.

Auckland is just a big city, compared to the other New Zealand towns, and too be honest I don't find it too special. Good place to end the trip though I guess. It reminds me of Sydney, just a smaller and shittier version. It is filled with asians, souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants. To my surprise there is a Wendy's here. Although maybe my favorite fast food, I held out. Plus no dollar menu and we all know thats the reason anyone goes to Wendys, best dollar menu out there. I opted for a Kebab, damn was it good. Will definitely miss them.

After my walk around the harbour and the city center, I walked a bit out of town to Mount Eden, a volcano mountain that provides a 360 panoramic view of Auckland and surrounding areas. As I started the 30 minute walk to the base of the mountain it started to rain. Got pretty wet but luckily it died out by the time I started my climb. Pretty good view from the top, Auckland's skyline is dominated by the Skytower. The Skytower is basically just a smaller wannabee Space Needle in my opinion. But on the skytower you have the option to do a bungee jump off of it which is pretty cool.

My walk back from Mount Eden was once again marred by rain, but didnt mind it.

Originally I was planning to take an easy last night in New Zealand, but things changed around 10 oclock. I had 3 german guys in my room as well as one Kiwi. We started drinking some beers and decided to go out. Glad I met them or I would not have gone out. We drank my favorite New Zealand beers, Tui and Speights. I will definitely miss them.

We headed out around midnight to Globe Bar, a big backpackers bar. We got rejected at the door because we didn't have any girls.

Let me just digress on this for a minute. This is the first bar in NZ or OZ that this has happened to me, but it has happened to me back in the States. It really annoys me. Any bar that turns me down for not having girls I will not support with my business. It doesn't make sense to me. How could you turn down 5 guys who would support your bar and buy drinks. Clearly business can't be that great if there is no girls in your bar. Even after you decline me at the door, why would I want to go into the bar if there were no girls. Just doesn't make sense to me. I took my business elsewhere.

The kiwi guy, Joseph, ironically, and I split from the germans since they were going to meet their mates. The kiwi and I headed around the corner to an Irish bar, Father Ted's. What a great place, plenty of woman there and Im sure it put to shame globe bar. Globe bar lost around 20 dollars business from me. Best yet, they had a live band that absolutely killed it. The vox on the lead singer where phenomenal. They started out with some chili peppers. Other standout songs included "Sweet Child of Mine" by Guns & Roses and an absolute killer encore "Killin in the Name" by Rage Against the Machine. Singer nailed these two vocally talented songs. The crowd was absolutely amped at the end of Killin in the Name of and wanted more but it was closing time.

Throughout the night, my last night on this 5 month journey, it really hit me how great traveling has been and how much I lived the good life. It sunk in and reminded me that all the great times were coming to an end. Being in a bar, surrounded by other travelers from around the world, with not a worry in life, just living the dream. These sure were the days, and im optimistic they won't be the last. Im young, adventurous, ill make anything happen that I want to, just got deal with some obstacles on the side in life (money, career).

Anyhow, it was a great last night, a great way to go out.

Day 2 : Sunday March 7, 2010

Last day in the beautiful country and on this side of the world. Spent the morning gathering up some last minute souvenirs and had maybe my best cappuccino of the entire trip.

In real time now, currently sitting in Aucklands Domain under some trees typing out the final blog posts, listening to some Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds.

Bus to airport leaves in about 4 hours. Looking forward to the flight, goin with Air New Zealand, excited for some in flight entertainment and some great tasting airline meals.

Will have either some fish n chips, a burger from the popular NZ burger chain "Burger Fuel" or another Kebab for my last meal in town.

Coromandel Peninsula - Cathedral Cove - Hot Water Beach

The shuttle bus left Thames around 10 in the morning, giving me a much needed sleep in. First stop was Cathedral Cove. Had about 3 hours to wander around there. Beautiful.

Had an awesome time in the water in the cove. Pretty solid waves as well. Got tossed around a bit but it was all part of the fun.

Next stop was Hot Water Beach, one of the strangest, most cool things I have ever experienced. On a section of the beach you dig a whole and get 64 degrees Celsius hot water, hot enough for you to only withstand it for a couple brief seconds. I forgot hot to convert celsius to Fahrenheit, but i just know it is hot as.

Many people were digging themselves their own hot pools.

I was content just digging my feet in. Even out in the waves a bit, you could feel the hot water under the sand yet have the cold ocean water above your ankles, such a strange feeling. It was still a bit of high tide so I was able to feel this. It was only a certain section of the beach. It is all caused by a crack in the earth with a nearby stream. Despite the science behind it, something very very cool.

Said goodbye to my warriors towel as I no longer needed it. (No I did not leave it on the beach)

I spent the night in the small town of Coromandel. I stayed at Anchor Lodge, so so place. A lot of asians staying there. Nearby was an old gold mine that you could go into and see glow worms. Coming off of a great glow worm experience in the waitomo caves I was definitely interested in this.

I braved it through the long dark old gold mine, slushing barefoot thru cold mud. I had a torch but was a bit scary all by myself. The worst part about it, as I reached the end of the cave about 50 meters in, not a single glow on the walls. No Glow Worms....was pretty bitter on that after I made the dark trek through. Bad timing I guess, maybe a few weeks off.

Still got a SICK picture of the cave, really like this one, not sure where the different colors came from, perhaps some gold traces?

I spent the day today in the historic town of Thames, only because my bus connecting to the Coromandel Peninsula didn't run today, so had to spend the day and night in the town. There wasn't much to do in town, which I was well aware of before arrival, again a shame with the bus not running daily. All because of the new bus schedule that started March 1.

Anyhow, made the most of nothing. The hostel ended up having a free bike rental, so I checked one out and cruised around on it all day. There was several networks of trail along the bay/marsh area. Reminded me a bit of Shoreline. Great place for sightseeing various specie of birds.

Ended up at a little park near a beach area and took a little snooze and got some skin color in the hot new zealand sun.

Hiring the bike also meant it was the first time i was operating some form of transport in down unders different road patterns. Even though I was on a bike it was strange being on the left side of the road. Right hand turns at intersections were a bit dodgy. I dont think I would have felt comfortable behind the wheel of a car. Definitely would have taken awhile to get used to.

For the night, realizing my days were numbered I picked up a 6 pack of my favorite Australian beer, VB. Since supply is very limited in the states I figured I mine as well utilize it while I have access to it. Not many of my mates, in australia or new zealand really liked VB,for me one of my favorite beers.

I just discovered this the other day when I was looking at the bottle, it is produced by Fosters. And for those of you that are curious, I never saw a single can/bottle of beer of Fosters my entire trip down under. That beer is terrible anyway and shouldnt be claimed Australian.

It was a quiet night in Thames but enjoyed my beers and watched Van Wilder with some people. Great Movie

Mount Mauganui

What a great stop. The "Mount" as the locals call it, is a rising holiday spot for Kiwis, and I can see why. It is beach suburb of the city of Tauranga, New Zealand's 5th largest city and the fastest growing city in the country.

Mount Mauganui was originally planned to just be a small port and an industrial area but was soon loved by locals for its pristine beaches. It was pretty cool actually, on one part of town you had a huge industrial area, the other part a mountain, and the last, a stretch of beautiful clean golden beaches.

My hostel, Pacific Coast Backpackers, was about a 5 minute walk from the beach. Unfortunately our bus got in at around 430 and was only staying 1 night, but I definitely made the most of my time.

Believe it or not, New Zealand has a plethora of great beaches along its coast, however on my bus route it is rare to come upon them, we just hit the main town, mostly inland. These beaches were the first real beaches I have been to here and I loved every bit of them.

I walked for miles on them and was awe struck on the amount of sea shells along the beach, all in perfect condition. As I saw from a few people, this beach was a sea shell collectors heaven. Even myself kinda got into it. I honestly could not get over the amount of shells, it was absolutely crazy. There had to be millions and this was all along about a 2-3 kilometer span. Low tide at this time obviously helped as when I returned a few hours later half of them disappeared into sea.

Anyhow I made way out onto an island sort of thing and walked to the tip of the land mass where there were heaps of fishermen and locals jumping off the rocks. It would have been an ideal place to catch sunset but unfortunately had a few hours to go and I had some waves to attend to.

It was my first time in the ocean since Australia and what a great time I had. Water was a bit cold but fine after awhile. I got in the water just as a pretty solid set came in, bringin back my old australian pastime, body surfing. Caught some great ones and was stoked on it. It then got a bit flat and took the time to look around. What a paradise I was swimming in. Surrounded by a few islands, birds everywhere and a beach that extends for miles, all with one big mountain behind me. Reconfirmed what a great holiday getaway Mount Mauganui would be.

The wind started to pick up and the waves had really flattened out, so I headed back in. The sun was just setting a bit over the mountain as I walked back along the beach. It really felt good to be on a beach, made me think back to all those great times on the east coast of Australia.

My days here are numbered and I am really beginning to realize it..not sweet as.

Rotorua

Day 1: Tuesday March 2, 2010

The shuttle bus from Waitomo caves got into Rotorua around 6 ish. It was a lot bigger town than I thought it would be. Rotorua is a top tourist spot in the north island because of its mud baths, steaming hot springs, explosive geysers, and the clouds of sulfurous gas that gives the entire town that bad egg smell.

There are heaps of thermal parks around Rotorua, many pretty pricey. I took advantage of the free geothermal area, Kuirau Park, near my great YHA Treks Hostel. It offered everything, from bubbling mud pools, hot springs, and a crater lake, not to mention that terrible sulfurous odor.

Anyway had a pretty good gander around the park.

I then took a pretty lengthy walk thru the city center out to the supermarket, where I stocked up on food maybe for the last time here. I went to Countdown supermarket, a Woolworths brand chain so one of my favorites. Other big grocery stores in New Zealand are Pak N Save and New World, New World may be my favorite, kinda reminds me a bit of Andronico's, its got some great class to it.

Made myself a solid dinner and called it a night.

Day 2: Wednesday March 3, 2010

Today I had only a few hours to play around with until the Magic bus came to pick me up at 130pm. I had originally planned to head to a thermal village, where I would have witnesses some thermal activities as well as Maori culture (Rotorua is also known for its big Maori population and culture shows), but the truth is I didnt have enough time. Basically had to change around some travel dates since the Magic bus doesn't run everyday, obviously a bit annoying but part of traveling. Next time I come to this great country and Im with a mate, I will explore by car, guaranteed.

I used the morning to catch up on some sleep, eat a hardy breakfast and walk around downtown. I figured I already had seen a good amount of geothermal, volcanic activity in the past couple of days anyhow (thermal park the night before, and Tongariro crossing). It was a relaxing early day before the bus came.

The bus today was headed towards our next destination, Mount Maunganui. On the way out of Rotorua we stopped by the made-by-a-kiwi famous sport, ZORBING.

Everyone had the opportunity to do it, for a small convenient price of 50 dollars, but I held back, not due to money but fear of maybe getting skydive sick again. It did look like good fun though rolling down the hills. You had the option of a wet or dry zorb. Wet you kinda just slosh around in the ball as you roll down, the dry zorb you are actually strapped in and are in a full roll, just like the ball. For me, it looked far worse, motion sickness-wise than the wet zorb. A great Kiwi invention though, I enjoyed watching people do it.

Waitomo Caves

Today I took a 2 hour shuttle ride from Taupo out to a small village called Waitomo. Not much goin on in the actual downtown area, but about 10 kms out was a nature lovers paradise, and for me a tourists paradise. Waitomo is known for its surrounding caves that were discovered by the Maoris several hundred years ago. Waitomo is known to have around 300 mapped cave systems. For me, I spent the day braving it through one of those 300 caves, the Ruakuri Cave.

I did a tour with the Black Water Rafting company, called the Black Labyrinth tour, a 3 hour tour through the limestone cave suited up in wetsuits and gliding through the cave in an inner tube. As you can imagine it was a blast.

I would have liked a bit more of adrenaline rush out of the tour but it was still a great tour, part of the time adventurous, part of the time sedate and a bit eerie exploring the caves with no lights and looking up at the thousands of glow worms.

We did have lights on our helmets but never used them too much. I'm grateful that I don't have a fear of claustrophobia because 3 hours in a narrow, dark, limestone rock filled cave probably would not have worked out.

We all got suited up in our wetsuits, helmets and killer white boots. I was lovin my outfit. Had a pretty good group, a bit older of a crowd but met some good people from England and South Africa.

Before we got into the actual cave tour we practiced our waterfall jumps in a nearby stream. I was feeling pretty comfortable with my new inner tube friend and was ready to be cruisin on it the rest of the day.

We then entered the caves, which seriously just seemed to be in the middle of the forest, pretty sweet. After we took time getting situated to the light adjustment, it was time to start our journey. I braved it goin first in the entire group. Im never one to be in the middle of a group, I will either be first our last. First you are a leader and you get too experience it first, and last because you have no one behind you, you can take your time and have the longest to capture the moment. You know what they say, if your not first, your last!

The beginning was a bit sketchy as there was an eel in the water. My first thought was what the hell is an eel doing in a cave. Since I was the first one in, the eel came right up next to me, they said it was harmless but nonetheless I found the whole situation a bit strange being in an unknown cave, no light, and a damn eel next to me. It got the trip started thats for sure.

Next up was our first waterfall, if you could even call it that. It was only a few meters high and we all had to assume our positions for the jump. Facing backwards, butt and tube out and a big leap outwards down into the water. Without the wetsuits Im pretty sure hypothermia would have set in within 5 minutes, that water was chilly.

We then were introduced to the glow worm section of the cave as we switched off our headlamps. What a cool site, looking up and just seeing thousands of mini green fluorescent lights. It definitely made the trip.

As you can imagine, being in a cave and it being dark there was not much diversity in the trip. We slowly floated along inside the cave with glow worms above. I only was out of my tube once since it was too large to sit through a section of the cave. Other than a few more waterfall jumps that was the trip but definitely a great one, will always remember it.

When they brought us back to camp they gave us free bagels and soup. The soup was tomato soup and it may have been the best tomato soup I've ever had. Of course I spiced it up with heaps of pepper but it tasted phenomenal..Maybe because I was in a cold dark cave for three hours, but then again...maybe not.

Waitomo was only a day trip, solely for the caves and I caught a 330 shuttle into the town of Rotorua.

Taupo

Day 1 : Saturday February 27, 2010

Taupo was only a short 2 hour bus ride from Napier. As I arrived in Taupo I had a voice in my head questioning, "Should I do it." The past few days I for some reason got the crazy idea that I might consider skydiving. In my entire life, Skydiving has been something that I always told myself I would never do. But something since arriving in New Zealand made me give it a bit more of a thought. Which is strange because I have been surrounded by these sorts of adventure activities many times during my travels previously. Mainly Switzerland and all throughout Australia. I think it was just hearing people describe their experience and myself really makin the most of new zealands adventure activities. Well I hit a moment where I thought if I am considering doing it so much, just do it. This was the place to do it too. Taupo is known as the skydive capital of the world statistically since more than 30,000 jumps are made each year here. It is also because it is one of the few skydive places with such a diverse surrounding, with the area surrounded by snow capped mountains, glacier valleys, forests and New Zealands largest lake, Lake Taupo, a lake bigger than the size of Singapore. By 11am I was booked to jump out of a plane at 2pm. The next 4 hours I spent walking around town, surprisingly feeling pretty relaxed. Too be honest, I felt relaxed the entire time, until the plane door opened and it was time to jump out.

I got picked up from my hostel and taken to the nearby airport. After a quick intro I met my jump partner, Steve, an American from Chicago. I was a bit upset that I didnt get an authentic kiwi but Steve ended up being great, he was also the most experienced of the rest of the crew. Not even sure if there were any kiwi guides. Steve is just one of the thousands of foreigners that have come over to New Zealand to capitalize on the THRIVING New Zealand tourism industry. Anyhow, after I was all suited up it was time to get in the plane, which happened to be bright pink.

For those of you that haven't skydived, you are sitting backwards in the plane, thus making it easier to jump out when the time comes. Doing a take off looking the opposite way of the planes direction felt a bit weird but was actually pretty nice. I didn't know how my body was gonna take the flight being not such a great flyer but held up quite nice...for now. Steve and I were going to be 2nd to jump, which I was quite satisfied. Better than being 1st out, and a lot better than being last out. As we reached our altitude level of 12,000 ft it was go time. They opened up the door/gate and it was time to make it happen. After the first guy jumped it was a matter of 5 seconds till I was hanging my legs out the plane not knowing what the hell was happening. WHen I think back on it it is almost just a blur, everything just happened all so quick. I think Steve gave a quick 3-2-1 countdown and it was time. As I leaped out the plane I remember the first 2 words out of my mouth were HOLY SHIT. I don't think I could even finish the "S" word, not because I tried to refrain from swearing, but for the fact that my mind just couldnt fully function and take in what the hell was currently happening. The first few seconds right off the plane were by far the most intense. I think the whole concept of jumping out of a plane catches up to you and you know your too late to rethink things. After those first few seconds it was quite enjoyable flying down at speeds around 120 miles per hour. I was trying my best to take in the views around me and look good for the camera that steve had. (the 5 minute video of my jump is a great one, cant wait to show people.) In order to give me a full look around on the fall Steve threw in some spins, much that I didn't like and I recall trying to wave my arms to try and stop the spins mid air but it was a useless effort, not like I knew how to do anything in the air, Steve was all in control. After about this 20-30 seconds free fall it was time to open up the parachute, my facial expression as the chute opens is absolutely classic. Traveling down at such speeds and suddenly being halted by a chute transfers out an enormous amount of momentum, erasing the entire face of any sort of previous facial expression. Well the hard part was done, all we had to do was guide ourselves into the landing zone. And as I previously expected this was the worst part of the jump. Something about being suspended up in the air and gliding around with a parachute made me feeling nauseous and dizzy. I ended up getting super motion sick on the way down. Halfway down Steve miraculously pulled out a bag from who knows where just in case I had to throw up He was just in time and probably save himself from receiving any in the face via wind spray. As you can imagine this was not to enjoyable to me. However I did yell at Steve when he stopped filming me, I told him to keep the camera on me, it was all part of the experience and I was paying heaps of money for him to operate a camera. Haha. I had my face deep in the bag all the way till landing, which was very soft and easy. No matter how sick I was I was still amped on all that had just happened and still managed to give a thumbs up to the camera and thank Steve.

Even after ground, my sickness seemed to keep on going. To spare you further grotesque graphical images, lets just say I washed out every single ounce in my system. I'de like to note that this is an ideal example to the differences of my New Zealand and Australia trips. Australia, my worse sickness was inflicted by an alcoholic strawberry shot on a pub crawl, and in New Zealand, the sickness was inflicted by jumping out of a plane. Both low points of legendary memorable moments. Back at the Skydive center I was all about trying to feel better, whatever it meant. I didn't bother conversing with any of my fellow jumpers or even watching my video or photos. It was unfortunate but it happens to about 30% of jumpers. Something to claim tho was that the man at the desk said I was the worst out of everyone hes seen sick. Sweet As. I may have physced myself out since Ive heard other people get sick and already knew I get pretty motion sick but I think its worthy to note that even though I did know the possibility of getting sick, it still didn't stop me from skydiving.

I'm not one to prove anything to anyone but myself. What I proved by jumping from 12,000 feet out of a plane I don't know but the fact of the matter is I did it.

Will I skydive again, probably not. Do I regret doing it, absolutely not. How would I describe the feeling of jumping out of a plane? Indescribable.

It was around 6 as I got back to my hostel. I headed straight for bed as lying down seemed to be the only thing that was keeping me alive. I woke up around 9 and had to make way to the supermarket to stock up for my hike the next day, it was a terrible supermarket experience. I forced fed myself some food in the night to try to get something in me before bed, luckily it all seemed to stay down.

Day 2 : Sunday February 28, 2010 - The Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Today I tramped the widely claimed "New Zealand's Best One Day Hike", The Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

My shuttle bus to the park arrived at my hostel at 540am, so I woke up around quarter to 5. I was still feeling pretty shitty from the day before and did not know how my body was going to handle a 20 kilometer hike. I questioned every bit of it but carried on. Half-awake/sick I frantically prepared my food for the hike and brewed up my vitamin c powder drink. The ride to the start of the track took about 1.5 hours and dosed off a bit on the way.

A little after 7 I started the tramp and the sun was just rising over the nearby mountains. The problem with NZ's best one day hike is the heaps of other people it attracts. With such beautiful scenery around you, the last thing you want is other people near you and getting in your way. I found myself always trying to distance myself from the hoards and never had too big of a problem. The beginning of the track was the worse but threw on my music for that section of the tramp. Usually it would be rare to find yourself ahead or behind within a 100 meter radius, but when I did, it was a perfect time for a piss break as I was drinkin heaps of water to try to revive my body from the previous days wear down.

The path led thru some vast crater valleys and up onto the crater ridges. The path weaved thru two massive volcanic mountains, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, with Mount Ruapehu in the distant background. The entire Tongariro National Park was a huge filming spot for Lord of The Rings, including Mordor as Mt. Ruapehu and Mt. Doom as Mt. Ngauruhoe. The entire surroundings around the hike were all very picturesque, even if it was just a mount of volcanic rocks or a massive barren crater floor plain.

One of the many highlights of my hike was my side trip to the summit of Mount Tongariro. In the beginning, up at around 1600 meters, the clouds were all around me and visibility was very low. I eventually was at a point where I was seeing over the clouds, felt pretty crazy. Almost like flying in an airplane. I enjoyed my lunch at the summit waiting for the clouds to pass. The clouds never fully burnt out but still occasionally provided exceptional views of the directly opposite Mt. Nguaruhoe. Mount Nguaruhoe was definitely the most beautiful of the big 3 active volcanoes. Mostly because it was cone shapes, single vented and the only one that actually resembled a volcano. I caught myself always saying to myself how sick of a view it was. I took so many photos of it I started to feel like I was the reason that one band made that great song "I think I'm Turning Japanese"

From the summit of Mount Tongariro, I made my way back onto the main track along the Red Crater ridge. I found out where the name red crater came from. The red tint in the rock looked almost painted on.

From there the track made a steep descent down to nearby lakes and hot pools. This part of the track might have been my favorite. Not only was it steep but it was all loose rock/gravel. As I saw heaps of stupid tourists around me fall on their asses, I conquered the big downhill with great footing tactics, confidence, and the ability to know when to just slide with the rocks beneath your feet. Once you got the hang of it it almost felt like a sport you could call Rock Sliding. Yea so the steep hill filtered out to three major pools/lakes, all with a different tint of turquoise blue.

From the path moved onward thru another barren valley and led to the big "Blue Lake" I stopped there and enjoyed my great cadbury Picnic candy bar and downed more water.

From here not much left here on the track rather than more beautiful views, the occasional sulfur smell, and some hot springs. The end of the tramp brought me thru the rainforest, which I found pretty great having just been next to giant volcanoes an hour or 2 before. The hike showcased all climates and environments, possibly the reason it is such a raved hike. The final few kilometers in the rainforest was a great cool down and the perfect way to end one hell of a hike.

The 23 kilometer hike took me alot quicker than expected, a little under than 8 hours. It wasn't very strenuous at all and the parts that were were early in the morning when I was still feeling a bit sick. Devil's staircase in the early part of the hike was definitly the most tiring. Step after step after step.

I've had some pretty legendary day hikes here and don't know if I would put anyone in front of the other, they have all been stellar, and this one was no exception. I would definitely put it up there as one of my top 5 hikes ever, accompanying Half Dome in Yosemite and Cinque Terre in Italy.

Day 3 : Monday March 1, 2010

From the previous 2 days of skydiving and doing the popular hike, I was feeling pretty accomplished, got a bit lazy with sightseeing as I felt nothing would probably match or come close to the previous days excitements. Spent the day cruising around town, souvenir browsing.

At 130 I did have one last adventure activity in Taupo, The Huka Falls Jet. An expensive yet highly entertaining jet boat ride that led you right up to the roaring Huka Falls. The jet boat was developed by a kiwi and can operate in as little as 1 meter of water. We were flying right on the edge of the river banks, edging trees and rock cliffs. The signature 360 spin was a big part of the boat ride. It was a bit of a performance for the tourists on top of the falls looking down on us. We put on a good show for sure.

It was a great boat ride, definitely got some thrills out it.

After I took another walk around town, hit some golf balls into the lake, cruised past the Taupo Bungy site and enjoyed a kebab.

This post was too long and apologize. tired of typing, not liking my sentence structure and not much more to report anyhow.

But, yesterday I did something I never thought I would do in my life, jumped out of a plane 12,000 ft up in the air. Not sure where my motivation came from but the fact is I did it. Got some legendary pictures and a full dvd of the jump.

Today I hiked the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, NZ's best one day hike. Here's an unbelievable photo to hold you over

Not much goin on today, very mellow travel day, just gearin up for the final push.

Left the beautiful city of Wellington around 8 this morning. Was a great 2 days/2 nights there, really enjoyed it.

Had a 5 hour bus ride into Napier, with not too many stop offs in between. There was a coffee break where I of course got my cappuccino fix but other than a few toilet stops, not much to see or do on the way.

Napier is a small coastal town, and is referred to the "Art Deco Capital of NZ." As you may imagine, not really my sort of town.

The weather was very cloudy with a few showers off and on so wasn't missin out on too much.

By the time we arrived in Napier around 2pm, I had to deal with some upcoming travel obstacles. Basically the magic bus wasn't going where I needed to go so I had to find alternative means of transport, therefore leading to accommodation day changes. Was a bit of stress but think I got it all sorted out, just all part of the journey. I read a quote the other day which I really enjoyed, thought it somewhat exemplified the way I do things, "Overprepare, then go with the flow." I don't necessarily over prepare but I always have some sort of organizational structure intact. Sometimes if I try to just go with things I find myself worrying too much and always take matters into my own hands before things may eventually get out of control.

Anyhow, one hell of a lineup coming up for my final 8 days, crazy to think about how little time remaining.

I walked along the ocean for a bit and just took in the great sound of the waves crashing for awhile. Had a good reflection of the past and the great future to come. Sometimes the days where there isn't much goin on, they are just as satisfying as the adventure packed ones.

There is a pretty busy downtown area here, all mini novelty and artsy shops and cafes. The downtown area led out to Clives Square,a nice little park filled with skater teens and book readers.

From there I pretty much saw all the town had to offer and headed back to my hostel via the seaside walk again. I don't think any town can be a disappointment with an ocean beside it. Quite a rocky beach and heaps of drift wood but still a beach and ocean, can't go wrong.

Getting excited for my next 3 day stop, Taupo, should be the highlight of the North Island.

Few things:

- The beard is coming in alright, not as well as I thought 3 weeks into it though. Although not having to shave every day, or every 3-4 days to maintain my clean baby face look is a great feeling. shaving sucks, have never really enjoyed it.
- From above, I've given up all hope in ever growing a full mustache, just don't have what it takes, ill never be a mexican garibaldi
- Internet is expensive here (6 NZ dollars an hour) and greatly miss my free mcdonalds internet connection. But I do save heaps of time writing these posts offline.
- Ive added up all my estimated expenses for the next week, should be on the plane home with around 200 dollars left, just gotta make sure I don't take any apples into US customs. Maybe Ill just make a GRAND return and try to smuggle a sheep in my bag!
- I met a girl from Iceland today, first time I have ever encountered a person from that country. I like what I see
- A bit of an older crowd that travels around New Zealand, quite opposite of the east coast in Australia. Sometimes I am amazed at the 70+ aged people I see traveling around, mostly pairs of women.
- Dave Matthews has given some amazing road tunes as well as great for falling asleep too

Day 1: Wednesday February 24, 2010

Had an extremely smooth day of traveling today. By the time I got on my airport shuttle in Christchurch at 1 pm, it took only 3 hours travel time and was checked in safe and sound in my Wellington hostel at 4pm. A great travel move by me flying. The ferry connecting the north/south island takes 3 hours itself, plus I didn't have one more overnight stop in the north islands town of Kaikoura, where I have already stayed a few weeks ago. The flight from Christchurch to Wellington was only about 50 minutes. I paid around 40 US dollars for the flight including checked baggage, great price! (Airline was Jetstar). The ferry ride would have cost a little bit more than 40. It was a wise move. After getting off the plane in Wellington I boarded a luxurious shuttle bus that took me 8kms into the city center, the bus had free wifi, pretty sweet.

Wellington, New Zealands capital, is a great city pumping with heaps of restaurants and cafes. It is the sister city of San Francisco and definitely noticed a few similarities.Harbourside is a great area bustling with massive amounts of bikers, walkers and runners. They have a cable car too but never checked it out. The city is also built on a fault line.

Since I arrived late afternoon didn't have much time to do any big activities so I took a stroll along the harbour rocking out to some tunes on the ipod. Caught the sunset and snapped some photos and headed back towards my hostel.

Day 2: Thursday February 25, 2010

Today I woke up to a little rain as I had a pretty good sleep in. After breakfast I made way to Te Papa, New Zealand's National Museum. Now I am never one to enjoy museums but was quite impressed with this one, I spent well over 2 hours in the 6 story museum and enjoyed every moment of it. I probably never would have given it a gander had admission not be free but yes truly a great enjoyable learning experience.

The museum had a bit of everything, with my favorite exhibits being the colossal squid, volcanoes, maori history, and greenstone collection.

The colossal squid was a recent addition in the past 2 years. A New Zealand fishing boat caught it accidentally while down near antarctica. The squids eyes are apparently the size of soccer balls, crazy. Saw some live video of the catch, all pretty interesting.

Great day at the museum, expanded my knowledge on the culture and history of New Zealand.

Afterward I made my way up the nearby Mount Victoria for a panoramic view of the city. Wellington is also given the name Windy Wellington, well today gave some glimpses why, was pretty windy in the afternoon. The hike to the summit was a pretty steady climb. The summit is 169 meters high. Although a tiring hike, I kept thinking back to the hike I did a week ago where I climbed 1300 meters, and told myself all these small climbs are nothing.

Many areas in and around Wellington were used for filming spots for the Lord of The Rings series. The track up to Mount Victoria showcased one of the film sites. Can't recall which movie but it was the part in the woods where they are being chased by the black horse rider. Don't think I found the exact location but definitely the general area, still something to claim.

Once I reached the summit there was indeed a very good view of the city, a 360 degree panorama, saw the airport and all. Unfortunately it was extremely hazy and photo conditions were not ideal.

Anyhow still a good view and enjoyed the hike back down to town thru the forest.

With not much else to do, I trekked again harbourside and made way for the Parliament building. It is called the "Beehive" so I figured I would just go and see what it was all about.

Anyhow, it was about 630 and I really didn't have anything to do and I didn't want to waste time sitting around in the hostel. I decided to hike back up Mount Victoria to catch the 8 oclock sunset. Besides, the extra training couldn't hurt as I have my final New Zealand hike in 4 days that weighs in at 20 kilometers and 8 hours long. I will be trekking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, known as New Zealand's best one day hike, expect a great review.

Took my time as I hiked back up the mountain and took in the great surrounding and tranquil forest. When I reached the summit, down below was still hazy, but once sunset came it didn't matter. It was a great one and got heaps of great photos. Just a few.

Back down in the city I decided to eat out as I approach my final days here and with limited chances to eat my favorite Oz/NZ eat out food that doesn't seem to exist back home, Kebabs. It was my first Kebab from New Zealand and too be honest didn't come close to that in Australia but nonetheless still very tasty. Like I felt when I departed Europe, I will miss the Kebabs.

Few notes:

- Been making a new sandwich, I call it the HHCC. Hummus, Ham and Cream Cheese. The hummus I use is roasted capsicum but chili powder is a crucial additive. Great for days on long bus rides and quick eats. Very tasty.
- I eat atleast 1 banana a day and usually 1 or 2 apples
- Sometimes I buy milk when Im in a city for more than 2 days, I drink an entire liter in one sitting.
- I drink an average of 5 cappuccinos a week.
- Still loving the tap water here, so good
- Got some great adventure activities coming up, mainly underground cave water tubing. Can't wait
- My final days, around 10, seemed to be all planned out and have a perfect schedule lined up.
- my digital camera is absolutely beat, the thing is a trooper and is just as world traveled I have been. glad its held up

After a pretty long and sleepy day on the bus, we made it into Christchurch around 2 oclock. For you dedicated readers, you will know that Christchurch is the city where my entire New Zealand journey began a little more than 2 weeks ago, thus completing my south island circuit.

Last time in Christchurch I only had about 7 hours there, and I spent most of them in bed since it was past midnight when my plane arrived. I now got to experience the city in the day light, and in the very warm 29 degree celcius sun. It is a very english city with a european feel to it.

It's a pretty good size city, 3rd largest in New Zealand I believe. I didn't find that there was much to do though. The main spots of interests is Cathedral Square and the Botanical Gardens. Took a pretty good nap in the gardens before making my way back thru town back to my hostel.

In the night,I met up with some friends from the bus, Holly, Stef and Paul, all from England. Tonight was Pauls 25th birthday. I skipped out on their thai dinner but met them after for a few drinks. Christchurch definitely isn't a party town, especially on a tuesday night. Anyhow we still made a good night out of it with some sparkling vino, chocolate cake and a few beers at the local pub.

As we were heading back to our hostels we came across a bar with about 10 people in it and a live music. We decided to check it out and get one more round of beers. Well the live music was that off guitarist/singer and songwriter Ollie, or Oliver. What a find in the New Zealand music scene. He plays daily around bars in Christchurch and has toured around New Zealand and Australia. He played mostly covers but unbelievable covers, my favorites being some Pearl Jam, Ben Harper and Black Seeds songs.

I went up to him after the show and expressed my liking to his music. He ended up giving me his demo album and contact details. I know good music when I hear it, he's great. You can check his music out at www.oliversmusic.com

Nights like that are special when you just check out a small music scene and you just get blown away. For someone that is so fond of music like myself it really a great feeling to come upon such talent, especially playing music that is right in my music spectrum.

I said goodbye to my british friends as they are taking off for New zealand on Thursday and headed back to the hostel. Made the most of a night in a town where not much was going on. Sweet As

After leaving Dunedin, the bus continued up the east coast. Our first stop were the Moeraki boulders. The Moeraki boulders are some huge great rocks just scattered across the seashore renowned for their unique spherical shape. Pretty interesting.

The bus then began to leave the coast line and head inland. Our next stop was the Mount Cook Salmon Farm, supposedly some of the best quality salmon you can get in the world. The place offered free fish feeding but the salmon weren't to friendly today as they really never came out near the top of the water.

Afterwards we made way to Lake Pukaki, an insanely smurf blue colored lake with an outstanding view of the nearby Mount Cook. The color of the lake is caused by the so called "rock flour" that boosts the glacier blue color in the water. Unfortunately it was a bit hazy in the distance and the pictures truly didnt look as good as the actual view, but you're gonna have to take what you can get.

Our destination for the night, Lake Tekapo, was just a short bus ride away. Lake Tekapo was just as beautiful as Lake Pukaki. The color of the lake just didn't look real to me, although my polarized sunglasses did give it a pretty good enhancement. Not much to do in the town of Lake Tekapo except just enjoy the lake and that's exactly what I did. I did a pretty good walk along the lake, taking some pretty great pictures along the way.

In the early evening I grabbed a table outside my excellent lake side hostel and brought out the laptop. I cranked out some blog posts and enjoyed the sunset with a few Steinlagers. Pretty great atmosphere for a creative writer like myself.

Side story: As i was going to fetch a few more beers in the fridge in the kitchen hostel I was approached by 3 asian girls who seemed to be having difficulties opening a can. They wanted me to show them how to use a can opener. I gladly showed them and opened the can. They were just soo amazed on the whole contraption. I got a pretty good kick of it, and then later thought how the hell do they usually open cans? They were about my age, and there were 3 of them, was surprised not one of them knew how to use it. I gave them about a 2 minute training, I still dont know if they understood how it worked as I had to open their second can as well.

Lake Tekapo is the best place in New Zealand to view the stars, and possibly the world claimed by some scientists. The lights in Lake Tekapo are all special lights to maximize star viewing and no light in the entire city shines upwards. There were some pricey guided tours up in the observatory but I figured I could enjoy them just as much lakeside. Unfortunately though in the nighttime it was pretty cloudy and the stars weren't too visible. Thats alright, another time.

Dunedin

The next leg of my journey took me to Dunedin. Dunedin is a small town, mostly known for its Scottish Heritage and Otago University, the first university established in New Zealand.

The bus got into Dunedin early afternoon. My hostel, YHA Stafford Gables, was originally a hospital, and since has been transformed into a hotel then a hostel. Difinitely had an old small cottage feel to it.

I spent most of the afternoon walking around the town. There was some event going on as the scottish heritage was in full swing. In the city center there was some sort of bagpipe band competition. I stayed for a couple of performances, they were all pretty solid. The sound of the bagpipe has always captured me, nice sounding instrument.

From there I walked further outside of town to cruise around the citys Botanical Gardens.

With my great luck there happened to be a festival going on there, it happens once a year. It was just finishing up but got to hear the remaining set of this bluegrass/string band. They weren't bad, did a pretty good rendition of Proud Mary to end the set.

After my stroll thru the gardens, I headed into the college are of the town. The students return to school next week so some of them were just arriving and movin it. It made me really miss college and remember all my great times at Uc Davis. I really really started to miss it, especially seeing groups of people sitting outside drinking beers and throwing some hamburgers on the barbi. I was unfortunately in Dunedin one weekend to early as next week is the offical welcome weekend for the students and I've been told by some Kiwis it is one hell of a party. Too bad.

Building on Otago's Campus

I then made way back to the city center where you can spot a massive purple silo. This was one of 3 major silo that holds the chocolate for Cadbury. Cadbury Dunedin's factory is the companies only New Zealand factory.

Next up was Central Station, supposedly New Zealands most photographed building. Anyhow it was quite a beautiful station. Only 1 train runs out of the station nowadays and its just some old train rail thats supposed to be pretty scenic. Anyhow, I figured if its New Zealands most photographed building, I better snap a few photos of my own.

The town was pretty dead during the night so didn't do much. The hostel had a tooftop garden where I ate my dinner and wrote some blog entries. I did accomplish to finally do my laundry so I am free of laundry duties for my final two weeks. Should be interesting of what clothes I decide to leave here, ive worn the same 6 shirts for the past 5 months, pretty impressive if you ask me, Im not even that sick of them either.

The next morning on the bus, we had one final quick stop on our way out of Dunedin, Baldwin Street. Baldwin St. is the world's steepest street. This really didn't interest me as it didn't even seem that steep. I guess the 2nd steepest street in the world is in San Franscisco, so maybe im just used to steep streets in general. Alot of people thought it was great and they walked up it. It was just a bit too touristy for me, its just a stupid man-made street. I'de much rather use my time and effort walking up one of mother natures beautiful mountains or hilltops and seeing stunning surrounding natural scenery, just my opinion. But yes, I have been on the worlds steepest street, and no I havent walked all the way up it, just a pitty. To fortify how touristy this lame street was, there was a booth at the top where you could purchase a certificate saying you walked up the worlds steepest street for a mere 2 dollars. Laughable. I think I have a pretty good idea of the type of people who actually buy these certificates.

Queenstown

The town of Queenstown, New Zealand has to be one of the greatest little towns in the world. Some claim it is the adventure capital of the world which it might be. One thing that is definitely true is that it is the Party Capital of New Zealand.

I could have stayed in Queenstown for a couple of months, its not that big but there are things always going on and it just felt good being there. I'de imagine it would be quite the fun place to be in the wintertime as well.

Day 1: Thursday February 18, 2010

After my day at Puzzle World in Lake Wanaka, I boarded the Magic Bus heading for Queenstown around 230. On the way we had two stops, Jones's Fruit Stand, and the Worlds first commercial bungee jump over the Kawarua river.

Jones's Fruit Stand was pretty great. Started by a woman that used to be a backpacker and decided to start an orchard and a fruit stand. It is a huge it with the tourists, mostly the asians however. The free sample table was just teeming with them.

The Kawarua river bungee site was a good stop as well. Crazy to think that was the first bungee jump in the world. The creator, AJ Hackett has since set up hundreds of other jumps, making him quite profitable. Saw a few people jump, it looked pretty fun. If I had all day there I think I might have given it a go, not a joke, I was considering it. The jump was 43m high, a big difference from the other major bungee site in Queenstown, weighing in at a whopping 147m.

The bus arrived into Queenstown around 530. In all my travel books and anyone that I have ever talked to that has visited Queenstown, they all recommeneded Ferburger, a local hamburger joint. I was anticipating this day for awhile as I heard such great reviews about it. About 10 of us from the bus gave it a try. Well it exceeded expectations and I can say without hesitation it was the best burger I ever tasted. Now America is known for its great hamburgers so I was skeptical going into it, but Fergberger is the real deal. The bread, the meat, the sauce. I would go back to Queenstown just to get another. It is not just a hit with backpackers, but also locals. The burger joint is open till 5 am everyday, to cater to all those late night partyers.

After the ecstasy I achieved while eating the burger, I was eager to see what this party capital of NZ was all about. First I had to digest it a bit and took a stroll along the lake with a Brasilian girl I had just met on the bus Danielle. The sun was just setting and provided a great view of the outstanding mountains, "The Remarkables."

Afterwards, still full, i met up with a group of friends at the Buffalo club. My mates staying at another hostel had a 2 for 1 drink deal with their hostel key so the price was right all night till midnight. To make things better, thursday night happened to be Buff Ugly night, a Coyote Ugly knockoff.

Oo what a night. Not only where there these beautiful girls (plus one big girl for those chubby chasers) dancing on the bar, but the night also included a wet t-shirt competition which was open to any girl in the bar. Nights out are always great when there is a wet t-shirt contest and you see these dumb girls put their boobs on the line just for a quick couple minutes of attention. Winner however did win 200 dollars.
In the bar I ran into a long old friend, Brendan, the guy who got stung by a jelly fish back in Australia and I pissed on his leg. It was pretty funny thinking back on the whole story. He calls me his hero. But then again, he may be true, what if I did not urinate on his leg that one day? Maybe I did save his life. Definitely a great first night out in Queenstown.

Day 2: Friday February 19, 2010

Had a pretty solid sleep this morning after a great night out. Met up with Konrad around noon ish at his hostel. Recovered a bit and played some card games with Jitska, a dutch girl from the Magic Bus.

From there, Konrad and I walked up the street a bit and took the gondola ride up the nearby mountaint which provided great views of the lake and surrounding mountains,

Also up top was a luge ride. One of only 4 in the world like it. We gave it a go and it was pretty fun. Actually had some pretty decent speed. I wanted to go again after but I am holding out for Rotorua, where there is another luge and it is supposedly better.

After we made it back on the mountain, we got our daily cappuccino fix at a great lakeside cafe.

Nighttime about a group of 10 of us got together for a mexican dinner. I would have much rather opted for a second night of Fergburger, but figured it would be could to interact with people and save some money. Had some great chips and guacomole as an appetizer and the main meal were burritos. I got away without doing much of the cooking so was on dish duty afterwards.

Afterwards we hit the town. The scene was a bit more mellow than the night before at Buffalo bar but we still all had a great time. Afterwards we went to more of a real club, World Bar. You may recall there was also a World Bar in Kings Cross in Sydney. Ended the night there and made it back to the hostel around 330 where I only got around 4 hours of sleep before it was time for my day trip to Milford Sound.

Day 3: Saturday February 20, 2010 - Day Trip to Milford Sound

I woke up from the limited sleep feeling great. Headed to the nearby convenient store, picked myself up an apple danish and chocolate milk and I was good to go. Today was a great day, will go down as one of the highlights of my New Zealand trip. Milford Sound is the most popular tourist attraction in New Zealand and am not ashamed to say I followed all other tourists.

The tour consisted of a 5 hour road trip to Milford Sound, then a 2 hour cruise, then once again a 5 hour return bus trip to Queenstown. If you know how to add, that is a 12 hour trip, made for quite a long day. The bus ride itself was one hell of a tour, taking us through vast valleys and just a huge scenic playground. We stopped frequently along the highway taking in all the beauty this place had to offer.

Our bus was called the Milford Discovery, Konrad cleverly liked to call it the Milf Discovery. We also had about 6 asians on our bus. I still can't get over the amount of pictures they took. I took atleast 20 pictures for them. They will take pictures of ANYTHING

Been a pretty long post so far, just gonna lay down some pictures of this great day. Not much else to say anyhow. Just one of those places where nature itself just captivates you.

Konrad and I

On the bus ride back to town, Konrad was dropped off at Te Anau, a town about 2 hrs from Queenstown. We parted ways since he was doing a further south tour here on the south island. He was a great hiking buddy and a great guy to be around. we became very good friends in only a week.

Back in Queenstown, I was just drained from the day trip. I made way down to the lake to catch the sunset and photograph the glorious Remarkables one last time.

It was my last night in Queenstown and I was hungry. I headed to Fergburger where I ordered Mr. Big Stuff, a massive burger with Edam cheese, BBQ Sauce and Bacon. WHoo what a burger, I am missing it so much just as im writing this a few days later. The Mr. Big Stuff burger reconfirmed that Fergburger truly is the best burger I have ever had.

From there I digested my food a bit with a final stroll around town. Ended up seeing some people from the bus watching a firedancer near the lake. They were drinking a bottle of wine so I headed to the nearby liquor store and bought myself a personal 6 pack of Steinlager. I was so full but the beers tasted good. I originally planned on goin out but none of my friends were going out and I realized how tired I was from the full day of traveling. I knew I had some great 2 previous nights out so wasn't too worried about it.

As you can see, I've been quite busy here in this awesome country.

I am almost a week behind on blog updates, the first time I've ever been that backed up. Just shows how much of a great time I am having here and how adventure filled my trip is. It's a good thing.

TWO WEEKS left in New Zealand, which are the final 2 weeks in this legendary 5 month journey. Its gone by all so fast

Few quick things.

- Love New Zealand, everything I thought it would be and more

- If I HAD to choose whether to return to New Zealand or Australia, I would choose New Zealand.

- Something about it here, just more me I guess

- Learned heaps of culture and history, there really are millions of sheep here, man

- I haven't bought a single water bottle the entire time here. The tap water here rivals the best tap water I've ever had, Lake Tahoe of course. The water here though taste very very good.

- Hostels here are great, very clean, cheap

- Lovin the conversion rate

- Did my first new zealand laundry, will be the last.

- I usually have to smell my clothes in my bag to see if they are clean are not, I just don't know anymore

- My new balance shoes smell so bad its embarrassing when I take them off. They have traveled all over europe and now australia and new zealand. Only a few more hikes left here and they are gone. Even I can't bare the smell.

- Really looking forward to the next 2 weeks. Leave for the North Island in 2 day, via a 40 dollar plane ride...20 dollars cheaper that the 3 hour ferry, gain 2 days of travel too, damn im good
